In a forecast presented by Juniper Research, the number of transit transactions using smartphones will triple to 16 billion by 2018 is still expected to grow in years beyond. Just like in airlines and other industries, transit systems which will adopt digital technologies in payment transactions like the use of smartphones and NFC (near-field communication), will reap the benefits of its efficiency, if not making the experience for commuters more frictionless and more convenient.
The report, Mobile Ticketing Strategies: Air, Rail, Metro, Sports & Entertainment 2013-2018 – also noted that SMS-based solutions received strong adoption in markets such as Sweden, where mobile accounts to 65% of bus ticketing sales.
Dr Windsor Holden, the report’s author states, ““The airline industry in particular has led the way in utilising mobile as a sales and loyalty channel. More than half of airlines are planning major investments in mobile over the next three years, employing mobile as a means of enhance customer self-service options throughout the end-to-end passenger travel process.”
