Mazda SkyActiv-D 2.2l Satisfying The Man...and The Family

Now most guys get excited about getting a car. That is because most guys have the idea of what their first car should be. Normally guys get excited about the red 300 horsepower, six speed manual transmission sports car with a beastly engine tone. It is an adrenaline filled ride like no other. However on the other hand if there is a guy talking about buying something bigger, say a station wagon, more than likely it is because the sports car cannot hold the entire  family they also have to transport; nothing to really get excited about.

A company so named after a Parsi deity, Mazda is out to show that station wagons can be exciting as well. Their weapon of choice is the Mazda6 station wagon with the SkyActiv-D 2.2l Straight 4 diesel engine with the six speed manual transmission, putting down 148 horsepower and healthy 280 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration time for the just over three ton car is at 0-to-60-mph time of 8.7 seconds. Optional for this model is optional set of really nice 19-inch wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Turanza T001 tires. The funny thing is that for a station wagon, it is pretty nimble on a kart track especially for a front wheel drive car. This is in many ways due to the Mazda6’s rear suspension setup, where the lateral arms do not err forward and higher than the wheel hub. Instead they attach low, below the wheel center. This results in an extremely sporting attitude over twisty roads as the arms push at the rear wheel down lower and closer to the center line.

At this point there are no ready indications that this car will be sold in the US, but take note that there will be models sold in Europe and a slightly beefier sedan will be available in the US. Slowly but surely, hope is rising for the station wagonists. They can have seating for five and still have a lot of fun. By all means, you can take this baby to the track because Mazda got the name for a reason.
